Answers to common Opera questions
From download and setup to privacy, ad blocking, AI, and day-to-day tips—quick answers so you can get back to browsing.
Is Opera free?
Yep—Opera is free to download and use. You get built-in ad blocking, a free browser VPN, and AI tools. A few optional extras may cost money.
Where should I download Opera?
Stick with Opera’s official download site. It covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS—just pick the one that matches your device.
Does Opera support Chinese? How do I switch?
Yes. Opera has Simplified Chinese and other languages. Switch them in the browser language settings—and on some devices, in system language settings too.
Is the built-in VPN free?
Yes. Opera’s browser VPN is free, needs no extension, and doesn’t cap data. It mainly covers traffic inside Opera—not your whole device.
What’s the difference between Opera and Opera GX?
Opera is geared toward everyday browsing, study, and work—AI tools, ad blocking, tabs, and so on. Opera GX is built for gamers, with resource limiters, a gaming look, and lots of customization.
How do I turn on the ad blocker?
Open Settings, find Ad blocker (or Privacy), and turn it on. You can also allow exceptions for sites that need ads.
Does Opera work on Windows 11 and Mac?
Yes. There are desktop builds for Windows and macOS, including different CPU architectures. Double-check your OS and chip before you install.
Does Opera have a built-in AI assistant?
Yes. Built-in AI can help you search, understand pages, tidy notes, and draft text. What’s available can vary by version and region.
How do I install and update Opera?
Grab the official installer and follow the prompts. Opera usually updates itself—you can also check for updates in Settings.
What if the VPN won’t connect?
Check your network and make sure VPN is on. Try another virtual location, restart Opera, or update. Still stuck? Opera’s official help docs are the next stop.
How do I import Chrome bookmarks?
In Settings, choose Import bookmarks and settings, pick Chrome (or a bookmarks file), and follow the prompts. Some other browsing data can come along too.
How do I make Opera my default browser?
In Settings, set Opera as your default browser, then confirm in your system prompts. After that, links should open in Opera first.
Can I sync bookmarks between computer and phone?
Yes. Sign in and turn on sync to share bookmarks—and some other data—across supported devices. What syncs depends on your platform and version.
What if pages won’t load?
Check your network, refresh, or restart Opera. Still broken? Clear cache, check extensions, or temporarily turn off VPN and ad blocking to narrow it down.
What’s the difference between Opera One and Opera Air?
Opera One is built for everyday productivity—AI tools, tabs, and privacy features. Opera Air leans into calmer focus, with soothing sounds, breathing exercises, and break reminders.
Are there offline installers?
Yes—for some desktop systems. Offline packages let you install without an online setup flow. Check Opera’s official download pages for what’s available.
